Let's attack today! A back 4 and Gana should be enough defence at home and would love to see

Pickford
Kenny Keane Jags Baines
Gana
Sig Rooney Mirrales
Niasse DCL

Here's hoping.

My first trip to Goodison Park was 1st December 1984 - Sheffield Wednesday 1-1 - just a few days before my tenth birthday. Me, my Dad and Grandad went a few more times that season and many more times the following few seasons until we moved away. I try to get back when I can, but it's not as often as I'd like.

Tomorrow I travel up from Brighton with my eldest - turning 8 on Monday - for his first visit to The Grand Old Lady. My Dad's coming too so it really is repeating the cycle and I'm hoping he falls in love just as much as I did 33 years ago.

Being an Everton fan in a school full of Seagulls supporters has not been easy for him and this season's start has not helped at all! Either way, we're all very excited! COYB!

Pickford
Kenny - Keane - Jagielka - Baines
Davies - Gueye - Sigurdsson
Vlasic - Rooney - Ramierez

2-0 blues, what do you reckon?

So attention turns to Saturday, and who the hell we start with after the match last night. My ideal starting line up would be:

Pickford
Kenny Holgate Keane Baines
Davies Gueye
Sigurdsson
Sandro Niasse Calvert-Lewin

Realistically it will probably be:

Pickford
Holgate Keane Jagielka Baines
Davies Gueye Sigurdsson
Mirallas Rooney Calvert-Lewin

I hope that Kenny, Lookman and Niasse at least make the bench.

Who would everyone else like to see in the team?

My team for tomorrow:

Pickford (although he will probably play stek)
Kenny holgate Keane Robinson
Davies schniederlin
Lookman klaasen vlasic
Calvert-lewin

Gives us youth, a little bit of experience in the middle with schniederlin, pace up top and what I think looks like a solid cb partnership. Though it maybe to early for Robinson so Martina Maybe?

Ed 25 would consider playing nearly whole team defenders but like koeman to be bold. I'd consider this

Pickford

kenny keane jags baines

Klassen guege morgan s

Lookman Lewin vlassic.

My team for the next game:
Pickford
Kenny Keane Williams Baines
Gana Davies
Lookman Sigurdsson Mirallas
Rooney

Pickford-obvious
Kenny-a natural right back, worth a go
Keane- obvious
Williams- Jags will be knackered, Williams has a point to prove, and he is more physical that Holgate to cope with Lukaku
Baines-our only left back
Gana- full of energy and great at breaking up play
Davies- again full of energy, gives 100%, is good defensively but knows how to move the ball forward if we get a breakaway
Lookman- quick, playing well for the u23s, actually a winger
Sigurdsson- needs to be our main no.10
Mirallas- loves the big games, a better option on the wing than Lennon or Vlasic
Rooney- got subbed so should be a little fresher than others, should be well up for this game.

I think we need a bit of width back in the team, and to stop playing 4 no.10s. Schneiderlin has been horrific this season and needs to be benched. Niasse should also get on the bench as he's worked hard.

Although I'm aware we are playing Man Utd, I think that if we go there with the same kind of teams we fielded against Spurs and Atalanta, we will get battered again. We can't be much worse than we have been in the last couple of games.

Everton's 25-man Premier League squad officially announced.
Some notable inclusions (e. g. Niasse) AND exclusions (e. g. Garbutt) in my opinion.
The aged-under-21 players (e. g. Calvert-Lewin, Davies, Holgate, Lookman, etc. ) don't have to be named in this squad list.
An asterisk means homegrown.

Baines, Leighton John*
Barkley, Ross*
Besic, Muhamed
Bolasie, Yannick*
Byrne, Sam John*
Coleman, Seamus
Funes Mori, Jose Ramiro
Gueye, Idrissa Gana
Jagielka, Philip Nikodem*
Jones, Gethin Wynne*
Keane, Michael Vincent*
Klaassen, Davy
Lennon, Aaron*
Martina, Rhu-Endly Aurelio Jean-Carlo
McCarthy, James*

Just for fun, here's a 25-man squad selected from players who've represented Everton since the mid-1980s or so.
They're selected on the basis of being in their prime and not necessarily when they played for Everton. I'm also looking at how the blend in the squad would cover most aspects and complement each other's qualities.
It's totally personal and subjective and I'm sure other fans will have their own preferences.
GK (3) : Southall, Martyn and Pickford
DF (8) : Coleman, Stevens, Watson, Gough, Ratcliffe, Distin, Baines and Van den Hauwe.
MF (8) : Reid, Carsley, Gascogne, Cahill, Sheedy, Speed, Steven and Arteta.
FW (6) : Ferguson, Rooney, Lineker, Sharp, Kanchelskis and Eto'o. (I've chosen Lineker instead of Lukaku, but that's the closest call of all my selections. )

Eto? Over heath, Andy Gray?

We should do a worst 25 squad. Hottiger, mikeal madar, Joe max Moore, etc?

03 Sep 2017 08:20:44
geoffjohno: in his prime (which was my selection criteria - not how a player was while just at Everton) , Eto'o was a better player than Heath or Gray in my opinion - just look at the top European clubs he was at and what he achieved with them.

03 Sep 2017 19:15:29
In that case, surely ginola gets In, maybe jags over distin. (Keane looks better than both of them tbh)

Very interesting discussion tho.

04 Sep 2017 11:13:28
geoffjohno: I did think about Ginola, but opted for Sheedy and Speed as the left-midfield options in the squad because of their overall qualty and consistency rather than just a few occasional flashes of brilliance.
Distin was chosen because I wanted two left sided (and pacy) centre-backs in the squad (Ratcliffe being the other one) .
Keane looks promising, but has yet to prove himself regularly at the highest level.
Jagielka was close, but not clearly better than the other defenders in my opinion.
My squad is about excellence and ability to deliver regularly, but I also wanted a balanced squad so that all positions and tactical formations were covered.
Everyone I chose deserves a place in my opinion because of what they delivered throughout their careers especially in their prime.
Maybe Pickford is an exception to that criterion, but no other Everton goalkeeper was good enough to compare with Southall and Martyn since the mid-1980s In my opinion.

04 Sep 2017 18:37:05
I also considered Latchford for one of the forward places, but decided on the others instead as he was pre-mid-1980s. It's strange considering our present "centre-forward" concerns when we've had such great ones throughout our history.

{Ed025's Note - the latch would be the first name on my sheet bobby mate..

05 Sep 2017 08:19:41
I think gravesen should maybe replace Carsley.

What I wouldn't give to have that squad in their prime right now. We'd win everything.

05 Sep 2017 07:25:33
Ed025 he was great, but I restricted myself to Everton players since the mid-1980s.

{Ed025's Note - then graham sharp is your man bobby, he was very underrated and a top finisher and target man for me mate..

06 Sep 2017 09:33:08
Ed025 - Graeme Sharp is in my squad.

01 Sep 2017 13:53:11
Tbh I think we have the making of a very good squad. My team atm would be

Pickford
martina, Keane, jags, baines
Geuye, Schneiderlin
Gylfi, klassen, Rooney (all interchangeable)
Sandro

Plus we got besic, McCarthy, lookman, key, dcl and a bunch of really promising kids to rotate.

Plus with Coleman and bolasie, 2 quality players imo to return from injury. I think we will do quite well. It will take a little tine to gel but if the front 4 can be fluid and flexible teams will not know who to Mark and when so we should create plenty of openings. It will all depend if rk plays attacking and not like we did at Chelsea and sit back trying to defend a 0-0 or 1-0.

Oh and i never wanna see 3 at the back ever again with these players.
