Can someone explain to me why there is a need for a director of football?
Do City Chelsea Man Utd Arsenal and our horrible neighbours have such a thing?
Are we not hoping to be as good as these if not better?
A manager has a style and plans that he hopes to achieve and knows the type of player that he requires. To make sure that player fits into his style plans and the Everton Ethos then the manager carries out checks etc before signing him in my mind i see no need for a DOF but there is for a head scout who the manager briefs with his requirements or players and the scout will then watch and report back.

{Ed001's Note - City and Chelsea defo do have one (or had one in Chelsea's case as he left recently), Arsenal have just appointed one. I can't remember whether United have one or not off the top of my head. They do not always use the title director of football.}

I suspect that Walsh was chosen purely based on Leicester City's ability over the last few years of finding players to fit into a situation that created their Premiership winning team. We all know that they had assembled a great team with "cast off" players that no-one else seemed to want. Players like Marc Albrighton were released by Villa and picked up by Leicester on a free I believe. Then Drinkwater, Vardy and Mahrez also picked up for next to nothing. Whether other people at Leicester were instrumental in assembling that team I don't know? I do know one of the Eds on here keeps saying that he warned it was a mistake getting Walsh at the time. What made you say that Ed? I know we can look at the situation now and it clearly does not seem to be the same situation as he had at Leicester. Quite the opposite in fact. I think Gueye was a similar signing to the type he arranged at Leicester and Calvert-Lewin and Lookman are certainly bright prospects. but our other signings have just not shown the value of their inflated fees.

{Ed002's Note - What made me say that it was a bad move with Walsh is that he is not a suitable director of football but a scout - and generally a very good one. We have been around this loop repeatedly.}

When Leicester won the league, they were just in transition between managers and we can see how that can help. When Moyes left and Martinez came in, our team finally had some attacking impetus but also still had the Moyes grit and defending training in their heads.
A year later we could only attack all the knowledge of being tight had gone. Similar with Martinez/ koeman.

Ranieri has to take some/ most of the credit for that title even though Walsh did find some gems. You could argue that Pearson had some influence in them winning that league, without even being at the club. His record was not bad for a team like leicester.
Leicester won that title by being tight at the back and winning the game with the pace up front. Whichever way we look at it, Walsh didn't win them that title, it was a collective of different things.

I agree about Ranieri being influential. I thought he was very unlucky to be sacked at Chelski. Great manager!

Well having just listened to Moshiri on SSN deadline day it appears what we have up front is what it will be. I hope to god that between now and January we don't get any injuries to Rooney, Sandro and DCL as we will be up rubbish creek without a paddle.
Bad management by RK and SW over replacing Lukaku (only given 6 months notice to find a replacement) ffs.

Hope there is some substance in the chances of getting Dolberg. If it happens I wouldn't be arsed if Lukaku goes as long as we get him strengthen the back 4 and get Siggu from Swansea.

I would look no further than Marco Silva if you do not offer it to Unsworth. Great young manager did well at Boro in half season and impressing at Watford.
