I spoke with a Dutch friend, involved in football in the Netherlands, had a few interesting comments.
1. Ronald Koemann would not leave Southampton, will stay for 1 or 2 more years and awaits Arsenal or Barcelona job.

2. Frank De Boer is probably the better candidate anyway.

3. Denis Bergkamp definitely will not join him, wants to stay at Ajax, or at least in Holland (he hates travelling remember)

4. Jaap Stamm also highly unlikely to join. Wants to coach his own team, preferably in Netherlands.

5. A Hennie Spijkeman, however, is likely to join FDB. Long time Ajax coach and scout, former goalie, and despite all the talk about Bergkamp and Stamm, Hennie is actually the Assistant Manager at Ajax, and has been since 2011.

6. Vincent Janssen, at AZ Alkmaar, is a very, very good striker, and only 21.

7. Importantly, he feels Janssen is a better striker than Milik at Ajax, who he also rates as a good striker.

I did not ask him about Marc Overmars as Director of Football, maybe next time.
These are only opinions, but reasonably well informed dutch opinions.

Personally i'd be happy with fdb and overmars.
And when lukaka leaves why not try bring in both janssen and milik. i'd love to see them 2 up front in blue next season. And with fdb as manager surely that would increase our chances of getting both.
Plus the money we get from lukaka should easily cover both with money left over aswell. So moshiri can keep some of his war chest and put it towards a stadium :)

Assessing Martinez style of play at Wigan and what we have in our squad might suggest the following signings. He plays with strong wide players, who can hold the ball up and attack in towards the main striker. Think Moses, now MacManaman - but also was N'Zogbia. Who we appearently tried to sign and were outbid as he went for over 10mio. Not impressed at Villa, but probably could be signed for 4 or 5mio now and still in his mid 20s. That could give 2 out of these 3 for wide positions - Mirallas, N'Zogbia and MacManam (who is an emotional re-sign). Kone could be signed to replace Anichebe. Victor could be sold to a top championship club for maybe 4mio (as he has upside and youth on his side), Kone has a resale clause of 6.5mio apparently - that might be a cheap upgrade. In midfield, I think he will play a 3 - with Fellaini or Gibson in front of the back four, and then Osman, Peinaar and Barkely sharing the right and left side of a middle 3. If Fellaini is sold, then - and only then - does it make sense to sign Mcarthy who would then fit perfectly into that defensive midfield slot.
Alcaraz as a replacement to Heitinga as a back up to SD and PJ - on a free, looks very logical to me, with added opportunities for Duffy and Stones.

1.) Are you actually saying Kone is better than Victor? Think has just had a great season and showed some really great qualities in hold the ball up, strength and finishing. wouldn't sell him and certainly wouldn't sell him to buy Kone!

2.) Would sell jelavic and look at buying a you g pacey striker like vydra or weimann

Despite significant progress at the top of the club - new owner, new stadium on the way, money to spend - Everton are destined to be a 7th to 11th club for the forseeable future if they make good decisions, and a 14th to 17th if they do not.
There is one way out of this, and it isn't spending more than the top 6.
The youngsters.
In the last 2 years England's young national teams, U21,U20,U19,U17 have carried all before them, not only in Europe but also in the world. The best young players in the world ages 16 to 21 are in England, not Spain or Germany or Italy. Two teams dominated the number of players in those teams - Chelsea and Everton. The rest of Europe is scouting these players (see Lookman deal) . Everton should build its team around these players, in every way, they have done a great job in recruiting and coaching them. If carried through correctly why couldn't they become the best team in Europe, when they are 24 to 27 years old. Its too early to blood last year's whole U23 team (which won the league going away from City, Chelsea and Man U) , but point the whole club in that direction.
Pickford; Kenny and Robinson; Holgate and Keane (yes, he was dominant at England U23) ; Davies, Baningime, Connolly and Dowell; Lookman, Calvert-Lewin, Vlasic. That is where it should end up, take steps to get there. Supplement those players with experienced teachers with great attitudes - Rooney, Baines, even Jagielka as a back-up, Bolassie, maybe Gueye. But tell everyone where you are going directionally. Some players we have to keep for the time being - Walcott, Tosun, Sigurdsson, probably a left sided centre half. But those would be interim solutions, then nurture your talent, supplement your talent with similar aged players, to add chemistry and a dynamic to the team - so don't sign 26 year old Turkish centre forwards or French/ Congolese center halves - sign a Dembele from Celtic, or a Tierney if you have a gap in the team.
That means a lot of clear-out to create space in training and in games for these players. Robles, Stekelnberg, Cuca Martina, Williams, Garbutt, McCarthy, Besic, Schneiderlin, Klaassen, Niasse, plus Sandro, Mirallas, all have to go. That way Lookman will be dying to come back. and the players will progress - because Everton had 5 players in the England U20 World Cup winning team. if we had 5 players in 2022 World Cup winning team, we would be a top 4 club. This is our 1992. Not an opportunity to be missed.

GB58 great post mate agree with nearly all I would keep Sandro though he has great potential. How brave would the club have to be to try your suggestion though.

I think it’s a good point GB but to me the bigger issue is leadership, the structures in place at the club and how the club is looking to progress and, in doing so, getting the best out of these players.

It’s all well and good having a good core of young players but if there is no clear plan within the club hierarchy (board, DoF, manager) about what they are trying to achieve in the long term, how best to achieve that and everyone working towards those aims then we will unfortunately see most of these players stagnate at Everton and eventually move on to other clubs.

It seems there is a chronic whiff of short term thinking at the club at the moment which only does more harm in the long run (and in the here and now if this season is anything to go by) .

3.) 07 Feb 2018 17:37:36
Very constructive post mate. You maybe need to consider your league predictions though. Nothing in this world is guaranteed.

4.) 07 Feb 2018 21:22:47
They need 9 points. I could put my Grand Sons back line into this side and get the 9 points. What we lack is a decent DM to partner Gueye. I do wonder if Sam is aware that Jagielka was a DM and pretty good too. Having said that, with 9 points needed from 12 games why not give the U23's etc a chance.

5.) 08 Feb 2018 08:37:14
I tend to agree ducksflysouth. but being an Evertonian. how old are your Grand Sons team? May be worth a look.

Best record of any club in Premiership in 2017.

Likely to win Under 23 league - ahead of Man City, Chelsea and Spurs.

More players in England U20 and U18 teams than any other club.

More academy players breaking into first team than any other Premier league team.

Announcement of new, iconic, waterfront Stadium for 50,000 fans.

Significant investments in Training and Academy complex.

Billionaire owner - with relevant business experience and football experience.

Chairman who has given his heart and soul for the club, bringing continuity and a long term plan - and finally money.

World class manager - wanted by 2 of the top 10 clubs in the world.

Director of Football who built the two last Premier League champions team.

Senior coaches and trainers a mix of world class talent and local, former club players.

If we win at Anfield next week - they should name the new stadium "Cloud 9".

GB58 you missed: The best UK fan base there is. After many tears without success still following the club in thousands for away games and near on 40,000 season tickets sold every year even when we are down in the depths. I agree with you mate. I am on cloud 9. Just imagine what we are all going to feel like when we actually start winning things again. My kids have never known success. I hope it doesn't take too long. I want to enjoy it with them this time.

Intrigued by the Director of Football vs Manager debate.
A natural separation would be:
Manager is responsible for the first team squad of 25 players, and all player-related issues with that squad.
Preparation for each game, including pre-game scouting of opposition.
First team coaching; including player development and tactics for next games.
And also defining to the Director of Football what he needs to ensure he is successful - new players, facilities etc.
Director of Football is responsible for identification and scouting of potential new players, and the staff who do that across the world.
Player's contracts and negotiations with agents.
Normally also responsible for the Academy, including the coaching program, staff, facilities.
The Under 21 or reserve team, coaching staff, leagues and tournaments they would play in.
The role that Joe Royle has done so effectively - relations with Championship and League clubs to ensure our developing players get placed for loans and player development at the right club at the right time.
The medical, fitness or sports science departments; personnel, equipment, philosophy.
The types of pre- and post season training camps, games, tournaments the team wants to play in.
Acting as an intermediary, on behalf of the first team manager, to the CFO, the Commercial Director, the Board.

These are both big and broad roles. Plenty of room for two very capable experienced people. Critical issue is that the two people filling the roles work very well together. Critical that both people realize that is the first teams success, winning games, that really counts; the Director of Football is the more 'senior' role, but is usually only successful if the first team coach is successful.

Personally, I believe that Martinez biggest failing was that he became so focused on building out the 'greater Everton dream' - initiatives that should now fit in the Director of Football role like new sleeping rooms at Finch Farm, US Olympic coach running the academy etc, that he forgot to concentrate on doing what was needed to win next week's game.
In today's Premier League a big club needs someone focusing solely on that group of 25 players and the next game.

Monchi and Emery; Overmars and De Boer; even maybe Overmars and Koemann; Monchi and Pellegrini. but we need two people, not one.

US Olympic coach? As the team were woefully unfit, I take it that US is a shortened version of useless.

What happened to Alcatraz. Good defender, wanted to come to Everton. Everton wanted him. On a free. Martinez likes him. No one else seemingly interested. Why isn't he signed. and announced, so he can join up and train together.

I have always been confused by Barkley's agents tactics. There has only ever been one club show any interest in signing Ross. Spurs. Spurs have a very strict wage structure. No one over 100,000 a week, not Harry Kane, not Delle Ali, not Hugo Lloris. That's been the case for years. Shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. There is absolutely no chance Ross gets 150,000 or even 125,000 a week. He will get no more than the offer Everton made him. The only explanations are either he is just desperate to get away from Koeman or his agent is criminally negligent. I think this all ends badly.
