I am as frustrated as any supporter after last nights performance and result. The confidence has been sucked out of the team since the derby defeat. I would like to think we would of got over it by now, surely as professionals this can’t be the case.
A lot of posts criticising zonal marking and people just saying the negatives about that way of defending.

Yes, you have players standing defending a zone but you also have other players who are meant to be blockers preventing the opposition from getting space to have a run. We can all have our opinions on this and top coaches have their own beliefs. The fact is whichever way you play it’s the players who need to take responsibility and Silva has said this.

They can train all week on it and players go out on match day and don’t do it who should the finger be pointed at? If we defending man to man and a corner comes in and our player gets blocked out in a crowd or ball watching etc we don’t have anyone questioning it saying that doesn’t work.

Pre derby game and during that game we didn’t have this problem. (maybe at first until the players understood it and Mina with his height was a help) again Silva says about maturity, I think Digne is a quality player but he gave away a cheap free kick when the player wasn’t going anywhere.

Also a few people saying get Rafa in to replace Silva? Rafa defends zonally too. I am not knocking him as he is a top manager and surprised he has stuck with Newcastle.
I am a Moyes fan and I am sure if he came in we would be more solid defensively but could he take us into the top four? Could he go to Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Utd and play in a attacking way as we did this season?

I think we have been unlucky in all those games to come away with only Chelsea point. In those games is when we missed a top striker. I say let’s get behind the manager and players because their confidence is very low and we need to pull together to get out of this. Hopefully this is a kick up the arse the players need to stop feeling sorry for themselves.

Singing the Blues

1.) 27 Jan 2019 10:43:50
Yes, the main problem is defence. Attack could be better and when we were playing well it seemed the difference between us and top 6 was a quality striker, otherwise we were going toe to toe with them. But since the Derby we've been unable to defend (set pieces especially. )

All systems have pros and cons and other managers use zonal marking. Yesterday the players just didn't do it properly, mainly not attacking the first ball and not following runners (most zonal systems have someone doing this) so not winning second balls either. Assuming he's telling them this you have to look at the players.

2.) 27 Jan 2019 11:19:45
We haven't got to grips with zonal marking all season not just last night it's clear that the players we have just aren't comfortable in a zonal defence system. I think we should start to ring some changes for the next game at Huddersfield first would be a change of formation to either a 433 or 4411 me personally would go 4411 with jags if fit coming in to partner zouma the full backs remain the same but I would change centre mid I would put McCarthy in midfield as this would give us a bit more tenacity in midfield and partner him with gomes with richarlison on left Walcott in the right and Bernard in number 10 role with tosun upfront.

{Ed025's Note - i want you as our next manager david..

3.) 27 Jan 2019 12:29:54
Problem is season after season we are asked to get behind the team and with the poor signings we seem to make, year on year, sooner or later you become negative posters!

4.) 27 Jan 2019 12:43:13
I don’t think the signings brands/ silva have made are bad. They have a job on their hands still as at least 9 players are surplus at the end of the season.
It will take time to clear them out and bring in players they both want.

5.) 27 Jan 2019 14:35:51
Singing the Blues - can you please stop with the sensible, rational posts! Absolutely pointless sacking Silva. As has been said up to the Derby we looked ok. We were the better team at Anfield. We should easily have had more at Chelsea and Arsenal.
Since the Derby the total lack of guts and leadership amongst the players has shone through.

Millwall were pulling shirts off us in the box. We can’t even block their runs. That is NOT the manager, that is the players. Oviedo apart when did we last go to a top 6 club and win? That Silva fault? NO. There is a whole culture of accepting mediocrity within the club. A whole culture of giving in when it gets tough. That cannot be changed in 6 months.

Brands and Silva have half a squad who they clearly do not rate ( and neither in the main do we) but they are stuck with them until either someone takes them or contracts end. We cannot keep changing managers.

Get rid of the deadwood in the squad - if I’m honest there is about 6 I’d keep. Get rid of the entire coaching staff from the old boys network. They all have this ‘losers’ culture. Bring in some winners both on and off the pitch.

But for Tuesday?

6.) 27 Jan 2019 16:13:18
DaveW not sure if that was criticism or praise? Lol I’ve never been called sensible or rational in my life 🤣
Frustration brings mixed emotions, look at Gomes a few weeks ago he was fond of the season controlling midfield and everyone wanted us to sign him straight away for £xxm. Now he’s a Barcelona reserve who’s too slow and can’t header a ball.
Come on guys let’s be rational and sensible about this.

7.) 27 Jan 2019 16:17:27
Ed025 and I would love the mangers pay check I think we need to give brands and Silva time and few transfer windows to sort out the mess of previous regimes. But please Marco ditch the zonal marking until we have the players able to implement this system properly.

{Ed025's Note - i would love that david, but just like maggie the witch...i dont think hes for turning mate..

8.) 27 Jan 2019 18:06:42
I called this weeks ago when people were saying Jags is finished, get Jags in that defence and the fire of McCarthy in midfield and watch results improve.

Two other things I would sort out is scrap the zonal marking, we tried it but just not working.

The other thing I would do is bring Neville Southall in short term, and get him to coach Pickford and how to command his area and make the crosses his, he is still young and can think of no better person to tweak his weaknesses.

9.) 27 Jan 2019 17:57:29
we don't have a defender that can turn they are all rubbish.

10.) 27 Jan 2019 23:40:08
Could you imagine if Southall could give Pickford half his command of a box.

02 Jan 2019 14:21:56
Ed’s what are our chances of buying Callum Wilson?

Singing the Blues

{Ed002's Note - Around zip I would think.}

1.) 02 Jan 2019 15:42:13
Thanks. (Sort of 😏)

2.) 04 Jan 2019 13:43:03
Same reason as we would not like to sell or loan a player to any Club around us, applies in reverse I would have thought, so agree with Ed on Calum Wilson. Mind you we appear to be a Club that will pay a premium, so you never know.

{Ed002's Note - That is not the reason.}

27 Dec 2018 13:32:19
Ed’s if Gueye leaves to PSG is it likely we sign Doucoure from Watford?

Singing the Blues

{Ed002's Note - Abdoulaye Doucoure is the other player PSG are considering but Watford would want a very significant fee for him and already have a replacement in mind who will cost far less and will give them a good profit. Everton, or in particular Silva, like Doucoure but I have no doubts that Watford would be reluctant to sell to Everton unless there is a significant premium paid.}

1.) 28 Dec 2018 12:08:08
As long as better replacement is found for Gana, then I wouldn't worry, he always has his best games when we play against the top six teams and we have significantly less possession of the ball, however when we play a team we are expected to beat, moves tend to break down when he's asked to do a little more than chase down runners, and get knocks on the ball to break play up, he struggles when he has too much time on the ball.

16 Dec 2018 23:11:58
Morata from Chelsea?
Lukaku from Utd?
Ed’s? Any chance you think?

Singing the Blues

{Ed002's Note - They won’t be joining Everton.}

1.) 17 Dec 2018 01:25:28
I know not Everton related but what’s happened to Morata when he first arrived he looked really good. Reminded me of a young Fernando Torres.

2.) 17 Dec 2018 10:33:50
Morata - From what I've seen of him he's not - imo - much better than what we already have. Lukaku - I think he would consider it a step backwards.

23 Aug 2018 12:25:41
Any updates on Schneiderlin injury?

Singing the Blues

1.) 24 Aug 2018 18:38:38
Think MS said he’d be back training on Monday or Tuesday and could be available next weekend.

If we win Saturday we will be level on points with Sheffield Utd on 36pts. I hope we don’t regret those 2pts we dropped v Newcastle, that would have meant we could have been upto 38pts just 3pts behind 4th place. How crazy is that? A couple of big results which I think we have in us could still give us a chance of top 6 finish. It has definitely been a chance this season to have got into top four.

Singing the Blues

1.) 06 Feb 2020 12:02:38
Best not to look back on the waht if's, just take it a game at a time now. if we qualify for europe in anyway, great! However let's not forget that this team needs time to adapt to the new methods still and hopefully will push on next season. the lads will go for as high as they can if its european football bonus and they deserve credit where its due, if not then we look forward to seeing what carlo can really do with an everton side after a summer of backing and 8 months of adjusting football.

2.) 06 Feb 2020 12:56:59
I agree with wblue2 there are a few games we could if and but about.
If we can win the majority of our home games and draw the majority of our away games then we will get into europe.
We drew the newcastle game but won our away game so let's just say they evened each other out.

3.) 06 Feb 2020 15:12:49
Not sure it's quite as cut and dried as that is it Smit? There's games you should win and Newcastle was one of them. If we get beat at home by Liverpool I wouldn't say its a bad result whereas for example I would be disappointed with a point away at Norwich.

4.) 06 Feb 2020 17:06:23
We should have beat Newcastle but you could say we should have drawn or lost to Watford.

5.) 06 Feb 2020 17:19:35
Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal, and Chelsea games in a row after palace will either make or break any European chances.
We should go into these games in good form and a chance of points in all of these games.

6.) 06 Feb 2020 17:47:47
On current form since Ancelotti took over we are second in that only behind some team called Liverpool whoever they are 😉
Joint second with Man City since Silva was sacked.

7.) 06 Feb 2020 21:26:32
And we've done that with our starting midfielders out. It's amazing what Carlo has done. More consistency and cohesion each game. Top 6 here we come.

8.) 07 Feb 2020 08:50:33
We should have beat newcastle yeah, but we didn't so let's forget about it now we got a point. tough tough game against palace at the weekend who are under the radar having a more than decent season. the games against chelsea arsenal untied are huge as we've seen worse teams than us pick up points at stamford bridge and the emirates this year. united at home is of course also huge and hopefully us as the goodison faithful get behind the lads to get a result.

9.) 07 Feb 2020 09:36:51
I don't get this we should beat this side but loose to another. There are far too many variables that affect the match so to blindly say we should beat a particular team prior to actually playing a match is just ridiculous. Sheffield United is a prime example I would have thought most fans would have thought their team would have beaten them home and away? I just hope we beat everyone.

10.) 07 Feb 2020 20:14:43
Totally get what you're saying sa90, just think that there's a difference between playing against Liverpool for example and a bottom half team.

We can't be expected to beat Liverpool who are far superior to us, if we do it's a bonus.

But there are teams that we are better than, and if we are beaten it's points dropped because we haven't performed as well as we could/ should have done.

26 Jan 2020 13:50:52
I have been thinking about why we have been so weak mentally for a while now. The two goals v Newcastle highlights it and the manner the players bottled it v lfc kids.
Is it the character of the players? Yes it is, other posters have alluded to it about lack of leaders on the pitch, I don’t believe most of our players are as bad as they have shown. I think if we had a Van Dijk alongside Holgate, Digne etc they would look a lot better with someone to look up to.
Same in midfield if we had someone to lead, mit necessarily the best player but a leader. Like Phil Neville has a influence on others.
These players do seem rare these days.
Another factor is that we haven’t had a settled team throughout the season.
It’s probably only Pickford and Digne that have been playing every game. Everyone else has missed games at some point and been rotated. And neither of these two players have had the best of seasons. If we can’t have a settled team then nobody really knows each other roles. Especially when under pressure.

Singing the Blues

1.) 26 Jan 2020 17:48:48
While agree with majority of your post

I’m starting to get fed up of excuses being made for these players.

These players are professionals and are being paid a kings ransom to kick a ball around a field for 90 minutes and are clearly given instructions on their role. If they are too thick/ stupid/ whatever to be able to follow simple instructions and understand their role regardless who they play alongside we’re doomed!

Regarding pressure - the equaliser Newcastle scores was because of pressure - but not from Newcastle it was from our own players! Simple really keep the ball don’t try anything fancy see out the last minute or so, not for these players, about time they took responsibility for their own actions.

Rant over.

2.) 26 Jan 2020 20:03:49
That’s what a balanced team is top players can make other players better but the point about mental blocks and bottling games come down to characters rather than a player ability and we lack that at mo.

3.) 27 Jan 2020 08:14:15
I thought that’s why we brought Delph in. But it appears he’s not so influential on the pitch.

4.) 27 Jan 2020 10:38:44
I've battered Delph for some awful performances. Yet I know the player he should be. I think he will come good. Hopefully :/.

22 Jan 2020 12:04:06
I think we have a dilemma with Pickford he has the ability to be a top keeper. He will get better with a bit more maturity as keepers do. Do we persevere and give him time? The save last week v West Ham was quality but he was at fault for first goal last night. But not for the equaliser. Sidibe seems to be hot and cold but could be good with another solid CB alongside him and a decent midfield. Holgate has been a breath of fresh air and Mina has looked ok and could end up being quality but at the moment we need a more stable CB.
We all know we need a CM and hopefully have Gbamin and Gomes back ASAP. I would love to see us play with a three in attack DCL, Keane and Richarlison and play 3 MC against top teams to be more solid but against weaker teams and at home play Bernard as a CAM between the lines.
Which brings me to LB and Digne last season he was one of the best in the league but this season he looks to be lacking in confidence and personally would like to see a new LB who is bigger physically as we are vulnerable at crosses and set pieces with diagonal balls and strikers will always pull off to back post to gain the advantage. This is why Carlo v Newcastle away and Brighton he brought Keane on and put Holgate LB to deal with direct play. This is just my preference though and we all have our opinions.
Really positive about the manner of the performance last night with the intensity shown and early pressing to win possession.

Singing the Blues

1.) 22 Jan 2020 13:06:02
I don't have a problem with his ability as a goalkeeper. However, if you have someone who is erratic and is driven by his emotions then it transcends to the rest of the defence.

If he stays calm like in the first half yesterday when he was getting stick then it gives confidence to the rest of the defence.

I remember Southall giving an interview after the 95 cup final and they asked him if it was his best ever performance. He said it was nothing special. On that pitch he never showed emotion when he made a save but would bark orders to make sure he didn't have to make the save again. That's what we need.

2.) 22 Jan 2020 14:13:55
The main issue for me for their 2nd goal was that we sent the ball pretty much into our own box, from a kick-off, for them to attack. Should have wellied the ball out as close to their corner flag as possible!

14 Jan 2020 11:24:39
John Stones would be great to have back as he has prime years ahead of him.
What about Ross Barkley? Chelsea supporters voted that he would be the player they would most like to see depart and we are short of MC. Would he return and would supporters like it? Thoughts. I personally would have them both. I would draw the lines if Rodwell is mentioned though 🤣🤣.

Singing the Blues

1.) 14 Jan 2020 11:27:13
What are you on about?

2.) 14 Jan 2020 12:50:34
I can't be 100% sure toffee but my interpretation is that he would like to see barkley and stones come back?

3.) 14 Jan 2020 12:54:06
Toffee apple read the post. Would you have Stones and Barkley back?

4.) 14 Jan 2020 13:16:25
STB. I would take a rain check in both. Stones has a mistake in him every half he plays and Barkley was party to a rather bitter departure from us. So thinking back to the manner in which they both left, I’m satisfied we got way over the odds for Stones and pretty much market value for Barkley though it should have been more if he went when he should.

But the biggest question I should ask is will they improve our current squad? Not for for me they don’t.

5.) 14 Jan 2020 13:17:45
In all honesty, if both stones and barkley were in our squad now they woukd both walk Into our current staring 11.
Whether people want them back as they hold grudges over how they left, well not stones but certainly barkley.
Me personally, I would take him on loan. But I woukd take anyone at the minute who plays centre midfield who could pass a ball forward to one of our players.

6.) 14 Jan 2020 13:26:06
No No No, we have move forward not back + sign more under performing players we have too many already.

7.) 14 Jan 2020 11:53:05
Toffeeapple what are you on about lad, you have been on here 2 mins an this is the 4th or 5th time you have said a little snide comment to someone. All singing the blues asked is would anyone have barkley back with us currently being light in the cm area, off the back of the john stones returning posts. Really not hard to understand is it.

8.) 14 Jan 2020 14:20:34
stones maybe at a price, ross no lampard has already seen through him questioning his poreffessionalism, is this someone everton needs back? also with the thing of 'walks straight into our eleven' that's not a good way of looking at things as transfers shouldn't be made sometimes because they're slightly better than what we've got. capoue is better than what we have atm, is also over 30 and not good enough for the long term, ben mee is better than what we have centre half currently, would you want to go sign him?

9.) 14 Jan 2020 14:31:38
Which is why I said I woukd take him on loan, he is better than Davies, siggy and delph and schneiderlin.
So a loan til we get Gomes and Gbamin in and re ruitbetter quality in the summer.
Also we have to be realistic, there are plenty of players better than what we have, but woukd they come to everton at this moment in time?

10.) 14 Jan 2020 14:44:46
Been here for many years Bluetooth.
And as proof, it's still the only place to find people banging on about old players and dropped players. Barkley isn't what we need.

11.) 14 Jan 2020 15:16:52
I watched highlights of Chelsea game. Barkley didn’t seem to do much running. He looked to be walking a lot and not busting a gut to get in either box to help.
Not sure if this is evidence of him maybe reading the game better than me or if he is lazy.
I don’t think he should or will come back.

Stones appears injury prone. Can’t get 2 games in a row so for that reason I wouldn’t take him either. Shame as I thought he would be an England regular.

I think he will leave city in the summer but not for us.

12.) 14 Jan 2020 15:24:28
Ross isn't the player we need, no one remember when he used to do the exact same as sigurdsson and go missing in games?

{Ed025's Note - i certainly do wb..

13.) 14 Jan 2020 16:44:18
Short term, I would certainly take Fellaini back out of our former players, even though some will say never go back and move on.

Think Fellaini could solve our midfield and certainly an upgrade on Siggy and Schnids.

14.) 14 Jan 2020 17:24:09
Stones on loan would be a good shout. Fellani may work if it was a loan but that won't happen.

15.) 14 Jan 2020 19:24:10
Stones on loan with an option to buy yes.
Barkley no mother tooting way. The lad fiddled us out of 20 million and never had an end product anyway.
If we want to hover around 8th to 10th then that is his level.

16.) 14 Jan 2020 21:01:51
No and no.

17.) 14 Jan 2020 23:14:51
Find it disturbing and also strange talking about having old players back. Can we get back to doom and gloom, with added negativity please ;-)

18.) 15 Jan 2020 18:13:57
I don't want stones, Barkley or fellaini. All of these don't add real quality to the squad and will be on huge wages. With our current standings on FFP they are a huge liability to our development of the squad.

Let's think bigger and better people.

11 Jan 2020 12:56:32
What has happened to Banigime?
I’ve got a feeling Anthony Gordon may get a start today?

Singing the Blues

1.) 11 Jan 2020 14:41:15
Nope same squad as usual. Should still be good enough to beat Brighton but not exactly inspiring is it.

{Ed025's Note - you think davey?..

2.) 11 Jan 2020 14:43:06
Oh well not even in squad.

3.) 11 Jan 2020 18:13:47
How many more professional management teams do we need to convince some fans that a player they think is ready. Isn't?

4.) 11 Jan 2020 18:37:06
Unsworth thought he was and then I know he got injured last month in u23’s game. That’s why I asked about him if anyone had an update.

5.) 11 Jan 2020 20:14:46
It's a fair comment toffee apple. Seems as though there isn't anyone good enough coming through doesn't it - given how poor we are, if lads that are 18+ are not ready to get into the squad after a performance like last week I think that probably says it all.

All seems a bit strange to me. Usmanov has a few links to EFC now with sponsorships and naming rights. He’s a businessman and he’s not going to give money to EFC or his friend as owner unless he is getting something in return other than getting his brand advertised.

At the same time there is no point in him joining Moshiri in ownership of the club as this wouldn’t make a difference to FFP as are overheads are more than our income.
I understand the club is trying to offload surplus players and reduce the wages. But really if we could wave a magic wand and move on Stekelenburg, one of our RB (Kenny, Coleman or Sidibe) , Martina and Niasse.

Maybe others ie Schneiderlin, Sigurdson and Walcott too. Would this get us back within the threshold of FFP? Not forgetting even if all these could move on. Our club has ambition to bring in new quality players who will cost a premium which will then put us back to square 1. So what is the answer apart from selling our best players like we have done in the past. Doesn’t seem fair financially to us supporters.

Eds25 in fairness marcel brands has had a lot of deadwood to clear and we have been unfortunate with injuries with new signings. It will take time to get the squad sorted.

Singing the Blues

{Ed025's Note - i get that STB but as a renowned director of football you would have thought that he would have brought in a top class striker, a bloody millwall fan could have told him that, and what about our centre backs?...surely he knows they are the pitts so why are they stilll here and why have we not invested in better?, on his report card i would be saying "could do a hell of a lot better 4/10"..

His attacking threat is what makes him the best in the league. Robertson doesn’t do enough going forward.
I still think Digne can improve his defensive side and gives away some cheap free kicks in our defensive third. That is being hypercritical to a top player though.

I think Tom would benefit going on loan next season. He’s still very young and let him make his mistakes elsewhere. He’s got quality but still has a lot to learn also one of his best attributes is his personality and mentality for such a young guy I think everyone thinks he’s older than he is. The loan last year done Holgate a world of good and look at Kenny now too.
