Watching Newcastles goal. VAR involved and blatantly wrong in two out of the three offences. Corner ball was out of play and only one player between attack and goal. Only correct was no foul. Getting ridiculous now.

Have to agree DFS, also in our case a blatant penalty that should have stood, it’s time to throw the whole bloody VAR debacle out, why can’t the powers that be see it’s just a farce and simply is fair or just.

Isn’t.

VAR isn't the problem. It's the referees consortium doubling down on protecting their own interests. The entire process needs to be aired and the refs and all officials need to be mic'd up. Their resistance to this is suspicious to say the least. I don't mind hard calls taking time so long as they're correct. And the rule of "obvious error" is a red herring. All decisions must be consistent and reviewed. Why they block ex pros from being involved is also highly suspicious. They're fearful of being turfed out and so they should be. Embarrassing officiating all over the fixtures and not just "oh wow why do they always pick on us"
Also some of the modern rule changes haven't helped. Handball should revert back to "deliberate handball" and this era of yellow cards for all missed tackles is clearly a move designed to kill tackling. Also the use of slow motion replays should be reviewed. It's useful in the nasty and sly stuff but makes normal movement look overly deliberate. The game is played in real life speed and so the reviews should mostly be viewed at real speed. Seems like a lot to fix but it's really not that hard. The refs are the ones making this a big deal.

Referees no longer have to referee now that they have VAR making all the decisions for them.

Probably your best post FBS, spot on. What is terrible about all this, is VAR and referees are more the talking point than the game.

I agree FBS. Mic’ them up and force them to be accountable. It will also protect them from the vile abuse they get from players. No player I would hope would like their behaviour amplified for the whole world to hear.

I just don't know how decisions are made anymore. Ours was not a penalty because the foul was just outside the box but a free kick would have been as good, we didn't even get that. Then in another game Newcastle v Arsenal, the goal stands after three checks two out of three imo were obvious but the goal stood. Fir me the most obvious was Lintons push in the defenders back (two handed shove) , result not sufficient contact. No other word but cheating. Referees/ VAR are causing so much frustration/ anger that one day sorry to say a game is going to erupt. As FBS says mic the refs up. Rugby does it, American Football does it.

{Ed025's Note - its ruining the game DFS, the standards are incredibly bad and referees are just using VAR as a crutch mate..

Thanks DFS. I was listening to an evening slot on Talksport whilst the Rugby WC was happening. They were comparing referees in football to Rugby and lesser to cricket. As they say, referees are individual and it's their interpretation of the rules and so you can't expect a rigid 100% constant across-the-board, however the glaring mistakes don't happen in the volume they do in football. It's not about removing controversial moments and mistakes but it's about making them as infrequent as possible. And that's not happening and it stinks.

Clear on obvious / was it out of play - possibly not. Was it offside - possibly not. Was it a foul - definitely

Was game better before VAR - yes.

Warning this post contains pure imagination and in no way is a suggestion as to what happens in real life and similarities are purely coincidence and not intended
So Imagine if you will an ongoing tv series sports based where the actors while believing in one storyline are allowed to improvise and play out the plot as it happens. Yet another set of actors are under the complete control of a director who actually sits behind a row of monitors watching each episode play out and he’s the only one who knows the true plot and changes the direction of the story as he sees fit. So say for example one of the main characters does something that causes a decision in the plot line to be made . The director reviews the action and makes a decision as to what’s best for the story and this is then passed on to VAR and the referees, I mean the other actors under the directors control . Plot twists stunning viewing figures sore. I think it would be great tv show . Only imaging of course, conspiracy theories please get your pinches of salt ready ;)

Keep it simple; that’s all that needs to happen.

The ball was out of play - there was a gap showing the ball had crossed the line. Or Change the rule that touching the line is out/ a goal.

The player was fouled as they were prevented from competing for the ball.

The ball was played forward and the player was offside.

Rugby has it spot on. The interpretation of the rules is more on minor niche things. A knock on is a knock on, a forward pass is a forward pass, an elbow to the head is an elbow to the head and deserves a penalty for foul play…
Football is not a complicated game - keep it simple.

I imagined it Big C, but all I could see from your description was exactly what happens in WWE Wrestling!

I was thinking football themed with major tv companies called ‘ Cloud’, or something like that and another called by some initials like BNB and they dictate how the football league pans out by influencing the outcome by the clever use of VAR using graphics to move players either on or offside depending on which teams we’re playing, likewise with the goal line technology moving the ball. Denying penalties or giving them to suit they’re storyline. Like the Trueman show meets the premier league mash up.
All a fictional idea but I think it could be a success.
