United's Squad Balance and the Left-Side Dilemma

24 Jul 2026 07:39:02
{Ed's Note - Shappy has posted a new article entitled, United's Squad Balance and the Left-Side Dilemma

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Jul 2026 21:39:25
What a suprise. Another day gone. Still no rightback. Losing faith in this expensive recruitment crew, who have only brought in Hackney. In a job for 12 months and one player in. I would be sacked in my job by now.

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Jul 2026 22:40:22
Why do you sign right backs in your job too?

23 Jul 2026 22:57:43
I don't think u like me, Reg, always having a go. No, I don't sign rightbacks, but if I want doing what is necessary, they wouldn't think twice about getting rid.

23 Jul 2026 23:44:38
I suppose the equivalent would be to ask Dev: whatever industry you work in, if you knew there was a serious problem that has been around for four years, would (or have) you sorted it?

I don’t think it’s just this window that is winding everyone up, it’s the 7th or 8th window of disappointment (so far) in terms of an RB.

I hope I’m proven wrong and someone is signed up this weekend. It would be good to get them in and give time to gel with the team.

24 Jul 2026 02:13:46
I think it is pretty obvious that not recruiting a natural right-back that is good enough to play week in week out is a complete failure. In most business environments, failure to address a major need for this period of time would result in heads rolling.

24 Jul 2026 07:41:38
It would, but we still have time to get it done. I'd have liked it done sooner, but I won't complain until the window shuts.

The biggest issue we have is always the same, as much as we'd like to think otherwise, for our top targets, we are often not their first choice, so we either settle for next best immediately or we play the waiting game.

24 Jul 2026 08:39:28
The reason we're not their first choice is because of the inept management, dreadful tactics and refusal to give younger players a chance that cost us European football.

24 Jul 2026 08:58:24
It would be like having a F1 pit crew with only three guys on the tyre guns. We've had three and one with a spanner because he can't use a gun. But he's there to make the numbers up so that's ok.

24 Jul 2026 11:04:17
He is not having a go, he is politely telling you to stick at your job. ?

23 Jul 2026 21:33:10
I am getting more and more concerned that the defense for the first game of the new season will be O'Brien, Keane, Tarks and Mykolenko. The reason will be that Branthwaite will not be match fit and any new player will not be ready and will need to sit on the bench.

I hope I am wrong and I am sure GB will argue so, but it's an ongoing nightmare.

Agree4 Disagree0

23 Jul 2026 22:16:55
Didn't GB say Papa Gueye had signed.

24 Jul 2026 07:30:25
He also said this was a great transfer window for some reason, his love for dithering Dave maybe.

24 Jul 2026 11:06:05
Every pre-season, I want to drink in his pub where the glass is never half empty. God bless him.

23 Jul 2026 17:00:01
Everton linked with move for Celtic and World Cup star as right-back search goes on
My fellow Evertonians, I don't know anything about this player and if he is any good or not, but does this smell like looking at the cheapest option as I can't imagine him costing anywhere near Spence or Norton Cuffy and the like.

Agree1 Disagree0

23 Jul 2026 17:34:44
You get what you pay for. Unless you are Barry.

23 Jul 2026 17:53:16
Haha class Dev!

23 Jul 2026 17:57:30
He's a good right back and gets forward often, but you have to consider the quality of the opposition.

23 Jul 2026 18:28:18
Saw him in the WC, though I only watched a half here and there. He is rapid, tenacious, and they seemed to use him as a RW (perhaps a RWB?) . The Scots seemed to be struggling for RB as far as the commentary teams implied, and Patts was derided as a 3rd choice at best. Not sure where this guy is in their pecking order, but Patto started ahead of him? Not much of a compliment.
SpL is low level championship, so not great to judge. But the half where he was a starter, he got subbed off for running himself into the ground, and the next game I was very surprised to see him on the bench, cos I thought he was by far their best player against Brazil? Anyway, he did come on, and again was flying but seemed to always try to do too much.

But good players in poor sides do that, so im not gonna hold that against him. Small little lad, but unbelievably fast and very very brave (code name for a bit reckless) , got a cross on him and seems to be a bit of a player/baller (I know a few on here hate that term) .

23 Jul 2026 19:25:04
I think he actually paid for Canada in the WC.

{Ed001's Note - yes, he did.}

23 Jul 2026 20:48:14
I want whoever FBS thought he saw playing for Scotland tbh.

23 Jul 2026 22:19:02
Canada wasn't it.

24 Jul 2026 08:34:31
Hahaha, I don't even drink. Oh my. Goes to show how much I follow north of the border. I've just spent 5 mins Googl8ng to find out wtf I thought I was talking about. It seems I'm way off. He's called Doaks? Thinks he plays for Bmouth. And he's definitely not a RB, but he was good. I should have got a Panini book ffs.

Sorry lads. To be fair, I did use ?marks as I knew I didn't have a clue. I don't want anyone from that Canadian squad. Thought they were poor and only had that striker from the German League. It's a no from me. I'd have the player I was on about though on the RW.

{Ed001's Note - Ben Gannon-Doak, formerly just Doak, was at Liverpool as Ben Doak and then changed his name to add in the Gannon while at Bournemouth. Tricky winger, great pace but lacks end product. Most likely to beat 7 men and then smash an easy pass high and wide into touch, when it only needed to be rolled gently 5 yards.}

24 Jul 2026 17:29:57
Sounds like an EFC cult hero in the making 01. Thanks for putting me out of my brain freeze stupor. It was a tropical hot night and a 2am kick off, so that's probably all my excuses used up. I'll get my coat.

23 Jul 2026 14:18:56
Apparently we are going after Lois Apenda from Juventus. Anyone else heard this? Hope it's true. What a player, just what we need.

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Jul 2026 16:12:27
Apparently we are playing a waiting game to get a rightback. 4 years not enough then.

23 Jul 2026 17:12:19
Good things come to those who wait!

We must be due some seriously good things with how long we've been waiting for a rb.

23 Jul 2026 19:27:29
Time to spend a decent fee on a proper RB who can fill the role consistently for a few years to come.
Arguably the most important position we need to fill.

23 Jul 2026 13:42:25
The worry for me is the time we take to recruit, it then gives the incoming player or players no time to intergrate with the rest of the squad. They all seemed quite close and happy in training.

Good to see Rohl and Azou being greeted like they were new players. Nice to see Bainsey going to each of them in the canteen and having a laugh with them.

Agree1 Disagree0

23 Jul 2026 08:29:50
So, our best lineup as I see it at the moment is:
Pickford
Rohl
O'Brien
Branthwaite
Aznou
Garner
Hackney
KDH
Ndayie
George
Beto/Barry

Which leaves us with a bench/squad players of:
Travers, Myk, Tarks, Keane, McNeil, Armstrong, Barry/Beto, Ireogbunam, Alcaraz, Dibling, Graham, Patterson

Lacking a RB, DM, depth in wide areas, a decent striker.

4 or 5 can leave, 3 or 4 quality additions and we’d have a squad that should expect to push for Europe. Get it done.

Agree1 Disagree0

23 Jul 2026 09:38:24
The rightbacks we have been linked with. Doue, Spence, Bissaka, Norton Cuffy, Bellanouva, Fisher, White. None have moved yet, so they must be waiting for our decision.

23 Jul 2026 10:04:26
As it stands now, imo, it's.

GK Pickford
LB Mykolenko
CB Brainthwaite
CB Tarks
RB O'Brien
LM Ndiaye
CM Hackney
CM Garner
CM KDH
RM George
ST Beto

Travers, Aznou, Keane, Rohl, McNeil, Armstrong, Barry, Alcaraz, Dibling, Ireogbunam, Patterson

Sell
McNeil
Patterson
Alcaraz
Barry

Agree with a RB so we can move O'Brien to CB.

A DM, Jack, give Graham a chance and a striker and we will move forward. ?? COYB

Looking forward to the new season.

{Ed025's Note - i can certainly live with that Dev..

23 Jul 2026 22:20:21
JB not match fit.

23 Jul 2026 03:47:29
Just a concerning thought.. If we do have the cash for a new centre forward.. and bring in yet another player without a decent first touch.. I will eat all the hats I have.. you sometimes wonder.. do our scouts get sloshed before they view potential signings and forget to pass the right name to the management.

Agree1 Disagree0

23 Jul 2026 07:43:59
Yeah probably out on the lash with Grealish.

22 Jul 2026 21:35:46
We should be bringing a striker in regardless of weather The Chuckle Brothers stay or go. If one of them does leave, you would still want two in, hopefully with two different profiles.

We suffered last season as Barry and Beto offer nothing different to one another. That being said, I actually like one of their attitudes and think if he were to actually get a full season he could finish on 15-18 goals, if he were to replicate his form from the minutes he does get.

Beto can stay and Barry can go for me. Send him to Leipzig and get Franculino to replace him at a cheaper price.

Rumoured at 25m. Only just turned 22. Left footed which offers us something different. As well as being a decent goal scorer, he can play a bit as well. He has great movement, can finish, can also spot when a teammate is in a better position and is unselfish. He has 55 goals and 13 assists in 108 appearances for Midtjylland. 3 in 6 in the CL, 4 in 11 in the Europa League last season, 5 in 3 in the Europa Conference.

Get the lad in and then go for another one who is proven in a top European league as a goal scorer that can be a handful up top.

Agree3 Disagree0

23 Jul 2026 07:25:58
BN, they're good stats. And you can't argue the competition levels when the goal return is good in Europe too. £25m though. that seems a bit low, which makes me wonder why he's not all over the transfer news with that price, making him accessible to almost every club in the prem.

?‍♂️

Sadly I'm so battered by apathy, I can't see this happening. Need something to shake me out of this anti Moyes state I'm in.

23 Jul 2026 10:11:30
Supporting Everton isn't enjoyable at the moment with Moyes in situ. Unfortunately, he drains every ounce of enthusiasm from you and leaves zero excitement for the coming season. I don't think it matters who we sign as his tactics won't change. I'm hoping that he might start the season with good intentions, but it won't take long for the negativity to kick in.

Even if the likes of Aznou has a cracking pre season, I think we all know that he will still start with Mykolenko.

It looks like Patterson will be on his way, so we still need 2 Right Backs, a Left Back, a Defensive Midfielder, 2 Strikers, a Centre Back, as we're not sure how Branthwaite will cope and Grealish back. I know that there's plenty of time left in the window, but it's always best to get the bulk of your signings in early or at least already have them in place even if they've been at the World Cup. After all, Moyes does have the final say and he's not called Dithering Davie for nothing.

23 Jul 2026 11:24:44
He was available for about 10m cheaper last year, mate. I think 25m would be the Danish transfer record, which may be why he is so cheap in today's market.

There were the likes of Bayern and PSG looking at him before his injury.

Now it appears to be the likes of Newcastle, Fulham and ourselves.

22 Jul 2026 13:51:25
How can Forest spend so much when they aren't as big a club as ours? About to spend 80m on one player.

{Ed025's Note - you are going on the premise that we are still a big club Dev, maybe thats not the case these days mate..

Agree0 Disagree1

22 Jul 2026 14:37:35
They sold Elliot Anderson.

22 Jul 2026 15:00:49
Bournemouth will do the same when Scott gets sold, mate.

22 Jul 2026 15:02:55
Good point, JB, forgot about Anderson.

22 Jul 2026 20:49:08
If you are talking about the young centre back, he was linked with the biggest clubs under Amorim.

Already won the league, a cup, AFCON and 2 team of seasons (Portugal) at 22, and he looks to have a very decent career ahead of him. Very good signing for them. I believe he wanted him at Palace as well to replace Guehi.

I can't believe somebody like a Chelsea or Utd who are crying out for CBs aren't in for him.

If he adopts a back 3 at Forest, like he favoured at Palace, that would give them a back spine of Milenkovic, Murillo and Diomande, not bad at all.

22 Jul 2026 21:33:39
Utd or Chelsea will just buy him for £120m next season if he is decent, BN. That's the sad thing about the direction the game is going.

22 Jul 2026 22:40:59
Not wrong, Br, mate. I fell out of love with it a long time ago. It would be a bit bitter sweet if we won something now for me, and would probably enjoy it more for others. It wouldn't mean half as much as it would have, not even a couple of decades ago.
